Getting into the Vocal Programme at School of the Arts Singapore is highly competitive. But what many parents don’t realise is this:

👉 SOTA is not just looking for “good singers”—they are looking for young vocalists with potential, musicality, and artistic identity.

Here’s how to prepare your child the right way.

1. Focus on Vocal Foundations First (Not Just Songs)

Before choosing audition songs, your child must develop:

  • Pitch accuracy

  • Breath control

  • Tone consistency

  • Vocal health

Many students jump straight into songs—but SOTA assessors can immediately tell if fundamentals are weak.

👉 Strong basics = higher chance of being shortlisted

2. Choose the Right Audition Songs

Song selection can make or break the audition.

Strong choices:

  • Age-appropriate repertoire

  • Songs that suit vocal range

  • Pieces that show emotional depth

  • Choose a classical piece that is suitable for your age and range

Avoid:

  • Overly “powerful” songs your child cannot control

  • Songs that are too mature or stylistically unsuitable

  • Copying viral covers without interpretation

  • Pop songs, Choir songs

👉 Tip: Show contrast (e.g. one classical piece, and one Broadway Musical Theatre piece)

3. Train Musicality, Not Just Singing

SOTA vocal auditions often test:

  • Musical interpretation

  • Phrasing

  • Dynamics

  • Expression

A technically correct singer is not enough.

Your child must show:👉 “I understand the music, not just the notes.”

4. Prepare for Sight Reading & Aural Skills

This is where many students are caught off guard.

SOTA may assess:

  • Pitch recognition

  • Rhythm imitation

  • Basic sight reading

👉 Students with structured music training (e.g. LCM/ABRSM) have a clear advantage.

5. Build Confidence in a Live Setting

Yes, for the first round, SOTA accepts video auditions, but when you are shortlisted subsequently, singing in a room with judges is very different from:

  • Singing at home

  • Singing in class

Your child must learn to:

  • Project confidently

  • Manage nerves

  • Recover from mistakes

👉 Mock auditions are critical here.

6. Develop Vocal Identity

Top candidates stand out because they:

  • Have a unique tone

  • Connect emotionally

  • Tell a story through singing

SOTA is looking for artists in the making, not just students.

7. Common Mistakes in SOTA Vocal Auditions

❌ Choosing songs that are too difficult

❌ Choosing choral songs - singing the song that your choir sings in Primary school does not always work

❌ Lack of vocal control under pressure

❌ Flat or expressionless performance

❌ No musical understanding

❌ Last-minute preparation
